You just cited the EXACT reasoning as to why exclusivity on a free system is still important. You did not even have Steam on your computer, but now that you saw the ETW demo EXCLUSIVELY on it, you went out and downloaded it.
Now you have it on your system, and are much more likely to take advantage of its community features. If you buy ETW, you may take notice of Steam's weekend deals. You might purchase your first Steam game, as it may be on sale for only 5 dollars.
Eventually you may start to buy full-priced games on Steam. Digital Distribution accounts for around 50% of PC game sales. Steam, touting 15 million users, is the most active of distributors.
Exclusives expand their consumer-base. That's why it's important.

Umm... no, I already had it on my computer.
And if I only wanted the demo I'd just install Steam, download the demo, and then uninstall Steam.

Steam is not just a program, or a store. It's a platform. Xboxlive is to Xbox as Steam is to PC

Please do not turn this awesomeness into yet another steam argument, and that is directed at everyone.

You're my hero, Toaster. Well... after a week of holidaying I will now sack off work in favour of many hours of Total War.

Then I could just uninstall it when I'm done with the demo. Steam really isn't that big of a deal.

My God, there's enough tea and crumpets in that sentence to make Chuck Norris wince!

Unless of course you like the game, in which case you'll need steam to register and launch it.
As I said before, it is estimated that around 50% of PC game sales come from digital distribution, and Steam is the biggest of the online retailers. It has over 15 million active users, and is the most convenient of any platform.
Steam... is kinda a big deal

Sorry, but I'm gonna have to disagree seeing as I'm on 21% for this demo after downloading all day. Not to mention your GTA (or was it DeadSpace?) fiasco. I love my xbox because I can play stuff straight away. Even with installing stuff on PC I get impatient, plus it's far more likely to break. Now with steam it takes me three days to re-download a game, and my Half-Life 2 was still broken! Grr...
If my internet was at the standard it claims to be then I'd agree in a second, but at 8kb/s average, it tends to get a little annoying. On the other hand, I lost my Halo 3 disc! :O And have no way to get it back (unless I... find it). So +1 Steam.
In the end I can't possibly say. You know how hard it is for me to actually go out and buy games; but I've just said how hard it is for me to download now

Re: EMPIRE TOTAL WAR DEMO
I prefer buying the game and running it, windows is much more convenient as a platform itself.
ANYWAYS, me and p are gonna be doing zombies on this game when it comes out.
