Gaijin

Post by PiEdude on Tue Mar 31, 2009 1:06 am

This is a Japanese term that is used to refer to foreigners.

It's root meaning is literally "outside person", but it is usually used to mean "degenerate" or "barbarian".

Wikipedia seems to be more biased towards Japan, because I've seen almost no mention of this on their page, and of the little mention there is, most of it is quickly retracted or "clarified" to ensure that we know that it really isn't that common.

So what do you think about this?

You want them to add its orgin, which is Japanese, and are mad at the user for not putting that in.

That's not how Wikipedia works.
The article was written, more was added on, and then there came a sudden flurry of adds and edits, and here it is today.

Once again, you're standing up for Japan!?!?!

Wikipedia can be edited by anyone, we all know this. This is why schools typically don't let you use it for reports.

Japan ftw..

Stupid Gaijin... the all of you!

EDIT: PiE, the same could be said about the word 'gay'. It once ment 'homosexual' or 'happy'. Now it means (although not literally) 'stupid' or 'dumb'.

Sigh... Am I the ONLY etymologist here?

Gaijin did not mean "foreigner" and was corrupted to "barbarian." It had the dual meaning (Because the two were one and the same to the Japanese) and now has the main meaning of 'foreigner', with a potential derogatory definition of 'barbarian'.

Gay meant happy. It didn't mean 'homosexual' until the 70's. Now it has the dual meaning of 'homosexual/stupid' with the (very) minor connotation of 'happy'.

Wikipedia is correct, 99% of the time.
You have a few people going through and randomly changing stuff. And more people going through and changing it back.
