Guerilla Warfare

What is the best way to combat it?

I don't think any western-industrialized nation has successfully won a war against an enemy using guerilla tactics without resorting to total destruction of all civillians and their property.

What do you think should be done against guerillas?

Napalm the forest.

Use Infra-red sensors to point out targets and mark them, then take care of them accordingly (unless im missing something here >.>) otherwise burn it i guess, but finding them and taking them out via special tactics units, or using airships to attack designated set spots, I think that'd be efficient without purging an entire sanction of forest of anything.

The answer is simple

If Guerrillas are hiding a village, burn the village

If they are in the forest, Burn the Forest.

If they are dressing like civilians issue a shoot on sight command and issue warning to civilian population that they will be shot if troops are about in their town and they are in their way.

And if they are in the city, Take it, and don't let the guerrillas take it back

The reason most European influenced (England, USA, Australia Etc) Countries don't win against gorilla warfare is because we use chivalry.
Well, not really, but we follow the basic idea of it.
We could blow up the country, but we don't, because there are innocent civilian, well there are heaps of other countries that couldn't care if there are innocent civilians in the area they will blow up, just as long as those innocents belong to the opposing Countries/Force's, then it is fine because they know it will have an impact on the Government.

So far, pretty much all of these tactics have been used in the Vietnam War(I just finished reading a memoir by a soldier from that war) and they didn't work.

In the jungle particularly, you can't just burn all the villages, because they don't need the villages to survive.

Some may live there, but they aren't a vital resource for them.

Also, thermal-vision doesn't work in most places, in the jungle it's useless, in the desert at night, the insurgents just walk among the populace, or hide in their caves.

we could have invaded north vietnam (and started a war with russia, but that's not what this thread is about) to stop them from being able to hide everywhere

Napalm, Heat detecting goggles, heat signature satelites, flamethrowers, artillery, airstrike, gunships, etc.

Exterminate the entire nations populace and destroy everything.

Perhaps not practical...

The best way to deal with guerilla warfare is to give them what they want. Then once they have it they will probably come out of hiding, then kill 'em.
