it had to do with the fact a punishment for a certain act in europe back in the day was to cut off the middle finger.

so people started putting just their middle finger up at the police to show that they hadn't been caught yet.

Thats how it originated

i wonder who was the first person to use the middle finger? i mean what was he just so pissed off one day that he flip someone off yelling "You know what the **** this means!" ".....I think"

Or better yet... F you wouldn't that be a complement? I mean sex is always nice Very Happy

to the middle finger part, it happened as a result of the hundreds years war

because the english bowmen were the deadliest thing in the war (besides joan of arc) whenever the french would capture one instead of leaving them in jail they would cut off there middle fingers so that they could no longer use a bow(thats how you aim and hold an arrow in place)

so after the war the french would make it a habit to whenever they saw an old longbowmen (noticed by lack of middle finger) the french would the retired men their middle finger and since they did not know much English grammar they would say to the man "pluck you" (thats what they could no longer do to a bow that used to be their way of life, their job, their profession, their pride)

that is how it originated and if you asked me i would say the original meaning is much more messed up and insulting than the current one

EDIT: damn you noir

"what the hell?" is a shortened version of "what in the hell?"

as in its something so odd that what you are seeing must have been spawned in hell
