I don't know if you saw this, but on the previous page I posted that they were actually using Latin, at least in Europe, up until the mid-1960's.

Well, Catholics generally had a working knowledge of Latin, and there were several attempts to translate the Latin Old/New testament to old English. Hence the King James version.
