True, but a space elevator will do for space travel what trains did for land travel. Make it more accessible, cheap, and common.

Yeah, efficiency... Chemical rockets are something that should be considered a necessary evil. Too expensive, too problematic, and too inefficient.
The rail gun should be able to deliver heavy payloads into space, and I believe it is already in some form of development.
