Re: Vigil's Rants.

New Rant!

Vigilís Rants

Part IV: Sequels, prequels and remakes.

UghhÖÖIt seems nowadays that movies, games and TV are virtually completely comprised of sequels and remakes. Now I take all of these with a pinch of salt.

I think some things deserve sequels and they add to the story and universe they are set in, mainly when they are not a retread of familiar ground. For example, Half-Life 2 really was good at expanding the story, characters and scale of the Half-life series. Sure they shared similar game mechanics and physics puzzles in area, but they added and changed a lot to make it a stand alone title.

Another example is Aliens. The original Alien film was essentially a spooky house in space, with a nightmarish Alien slowly killing of the crew one by one. Aliens couldnít have been more different. It was more of an action title, and greater explored the character of Ripley and the Aliens themselves. Terminator 2 was very similar being more of an action film and similar yet different to the original. They truly are some of the greatest sequels of all time.

However, not all sequels work as well. I mean some films that get sequels completely miss the point and just drag the first film down.

The Star Wars Prequels are a good example, as they failed to capture the feel and storytelling of the original trilogy. They destroyed pre established lore and were full of stupid characters and plot motivations.

Going back to Terminator. I personally think it should have ended at Terminator 2, as that had a satisfying conclusion and closed the lose ends up nicely with an ambiguous ending with a sense of optimism. Then Terminator 3 happened, with completely threw this in the bin and said that it was all inevitable and was basically the same film all over again. Sure it was okay, but it really didnít add anything, and took quite a bit away. Then not satisfied with that story, they made an entire series which was essentially Terminator 2 every week, and again made up a half ass excuse to continue the story and they are still adding film after to that franchise further knocking it down.

Horror movies are some of the worst offenders for all three. Large franchises such as Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween, Texas Chainsaw Massacre, Friday the 13th and Saw have had tons of sequels tied to their name, so much so that they have to be remade. I mean do we really need a remake for the original Nightmare on Elm Street, Halloween and Friday the 13th? Itís not like those films are that old, especially as they were all made around the 80s, and I really donít think a film that is only 20 years old need to be made again, though I will concede if they add something new and make it a new yet memorable experience Iím all for it, look at the 1980ís version of The Fly or the Thing for example. You might not remember the originals but, you do remember the remakes.

The problem is that it never is. Every recent horror remake to date has been a complete failure. It seems that most of these reboots fail to capture the atmosphere of the original and alienates it from fans, as well as new viewers.
The most recent example I can thing of is the new Star Trek Film, as it completely disregarded the fans, and tried too gain a new audience. It was good at dragging new people into this new incarnation, but the fans felt betrayed and were very hateful towards it and what it did to the timeline.

Oh and Saw. That is a series that should have died years ago. I saw the first Saw and I thought it was not too bad. Saw II was pushing it. I then watched Saw V, and my god, that was a huge turd, and now Saw VI. They took a pretty interesting concept and just ran it into the ground. So a guy with terminal cancer has the time and manpower to make multiple houses filled with elaborate traps, groom several apprentices and make advanced plans to begin after his death. It just ridiculous.

So where do games come in? Simply look at the releases. Every year we have the same old sequels to major titles. Call of Duty, Mario, Zelda, Tomb Raider, Halo, and how many FUCKING SONIC GAMES DO WE HAVE TO HAVE?

Sequels are abundant in video games. Itís what keeps the gaming industry going until the next new idea comes in. I mean do we really need a Bioshock 2? I really enjoyed the first game, but I felt it was a complete story and its conclusion was satisfying and closed it perfectly. Sure if it is done well and a good story is told I have no problem with it, but I worried about it.

On the other hand, in some circumstances I do want sequels. Iíd like to see KOTOR 3. Iíd like to see Battlefront 3. Iíd like to see Fallout 4. If you have a good team and good writers with something to add and work and care to craft a great game or film, then there isnít a problem. To conclude, Iíd like to see a reduction of sequels, as they seem to be a creative cul de sac, where writers are too easily tempted to go through the motions, and make a poor final product. I just hope more sequels actually try to do make it a good story instead of cashing in.

And maybe pigs will fly. We can only wait and see.

Next week: Halloween Special!
