Well, I'd say that killing the guy with the Samurai sword WAS a slight overreaction, but I've been taught that, in break-in situations, you do NOT let the burglar get an even chance. You do NOT say "Stop right there!" You give him a torso-shot with a shotgun, and then you call the police when he goes down.

With a sword, however, it's harder to know where to stop.

Warning to those who try to break into my house: I am armed with a 54 inch kingsnake who bites on command... and knows how to tie himself into knots around your hand/arm.

theifs generally break into buildings when nobody is home... if a person breaks into your house while you are inside its a safe bet that that person would have harmed you if he had come upon you...

I have a whole tool room right next to my bedroom door... if a person ever broke into my house and became a threat to my family, the last thing that person would be likely to see is me aiming my compound hunting bow at his chest and loosing an arrow at him.

Probably not the LAST thing he'd see.

The last thing he'd see is your ceiling, as the arrow would knock him flat on his back.

I say it was self defence. You don't know if the intruder was armed or not, so you defend yourself accordingly. I'm sure his intentions weren't exactly to kill, only to severely wound, but even still, I'd consider it justified.
