It actually wasn't... look at the traps they set and the signs of intelligence it was hinting at all throughout
BUT!!
Test audiences didn't like the original ending that... you know, made sense. So they reverted to the large explosion tactic that we all love so very very much.

They were more like it in The Omega Man, the first film based on the book.
