If you do not own any firefight esque games, Halo 3, or any of the Halo 3 map packs.... then no, it was not overpriced.

BUT, if you owned all of thoose (me) then yes.

I thought firefight was WAY better than horde from GoW or survival from L4D. Nazi Zombies is definitely a close competitor, though. I was hoping ODST would do more with the points system... let you unlock areas, weapons, ammo, health, armor, equipment, stuff like that.

Okay then, I'll do it.

ODST uses the same engine, and much of the same materials as Halo 3. It is essentially a short campaign with a nice new multiplayer mode. Other than that, it is the same old Halo 3 multiplayer in a new box. The package is worth the price to someone who does not already own Halo 3, but being that almost nobody who Microsoft intended to be buying the game fits that description... it's over-priced.

I think it would of been fine if I hadn't had payed for all the DLC map packs.

It would of been better if they had been DLC, and they reduced the price accordingly.

It a bit goddamniculious that I have to switch the disc to play on 3 fucking maps.

I'd like to point out that the whole "it uses the Halo 3 engine" argument is bull. Since when was the entertainment of a video game at all linked to the previous use of its engine?

Look at Halo 3 and Compare it to Halo 3.

They look similar, but ODST has much better lighting.

I only have one question before I continue this discussion
Did the Halo Reach beta come with every copy (or was it just special edition?)

so using the same game engine as another game makes that game need to not cost the same as a full game?

*pulls out list of hundreds of Unreal engine 3 games*

Bioshock, Unreal Tournament 3, Gears of war, Mass effect, mass effect 2, Gears or War 2, arkham asylum...

these are all the same game engine... I guess none of them should be full price either.

I still say its overpriced, the campaign wasn't even that long, nor did it have much replay ability, but I guess it would be worth it if you didn't have halo 3. Firefight is fun but just gets boring after a while. Even with the moves the covenant use (Flanking, formations, suppressive fire [as in wraiths and grenade spam] and few other things.) it still didn't make me like it, and got pretty boring when your alone. In my eyes ODST looks overpriced, if your not a halo fan.

Even though it is basically a carbon copy of Halo 3 with a new story, I still think it would be worth it if you didn't already own Halo 3 and the map packs.

It was a good game, I loved the story. Could it have been better? Yes, it could of, but any game could be better.

I say somewhat, because for some people (me) it will be, for others it won't.

The difference is that the unreal engine is very modular, and each of those games that you mentioned modified the engine in their own ways. The ODST engine is hardly any different from the Halo 3 engine at all. ODST also uses a lot of the same materials.

I see nothing wrong with being resourceful, but it should lower the cost of games. That's why expansion packs which build off of the same materials of another game are cheap. That's why Valve games, which often use the exact same materials, and certainly the same engine, are usually very cheap.

That said, it's really not an argument I spent too much time with, as it's not one that I'm very focused on. Thank you so very much for addressing my other points.

Civbase wrote:I'd like to point out that the whole "it uses the Halo 3 engine" argument is bull. Since when was the entertainment of a video game at all linked to the previous use of its engine?

I was getting more at the fact that it costs less for the developer... which should lower the price of the game.

Anyway, if Japan would just suck up their weird hang-ups about every developer having to make a new engine for every game, they might just revitalize themselves in the gaming market.

Again, look at the other things I said instead of picking and choosing. I suppose that means you agree with them?

Don't fix what isn't broken. Halo 3's engine is far superior to many games today. Man, the Halo: CE engine is superior to many games today.

Notice how almost all new games on the 360 market are $60, no matter how expensive they were.

Somewhat, yes.
