Nineteen Eighty Four - George Orwell

Post by Ziggy on Thu Oct 29, 2009 10:28 am

I finished reading it this morning, and I have to say, it's probably one of the best books I have ever read, Clockwork Orange and Catcher in the Rye aside. The sheer depth, elaboration and development of the plot is amazing, and the society established within the plot is incredible.

If you haven't read this, and you are interested in history and politics, give this a read. It's basically an allegory of the Soviet Union in its early days, but focuses on a single man who breaks away from the conformist mindset of the rest of society, which is essentially "thoughtcrime".

Anyway, read the book. If you're a narrow minded person, or one who doesn't really hold any firm stance for/against society or conformism, I wouldn't suggest you read this. Or if you're horribly stupid, don't read it, because it is quite complex. It does take a certain level of maturity and awareness to grasp the true beauty of the plot.

It's also very well written too, so if you enjoy writing of any style, you might like the writing style.

While we're at it, if you've read a book lately that you enjoyed a lot, chuck a post here detailing why you liked it, and what it was about.

I've heard it's good but I cant find it in my schools library and I don't feel like going to the public one.

I'll get around to reading 1984 eventually. It's at the moment #72 of things I plan on reading.

I recently read Splinter Cell: EndGame, the tie in novel to Conviction. It may be short but I liked it.
