My Idea for a Gun To Replace the M16

Post by PiEdude on Thu Dec 24, 2009 7:28 pm

Well, since bullpup rifles are clearly the way of the future, and the Military needs a shorter primary weapon, why not make the M-16 a bullpup rifle?

My idea is to make it use the same ammunition, clip sizes, and even most of the same parts, but to simply create a new design where the trigger and the magazine switch places.

It could have the same barrel length of the M-16, but the overall weapon length of the M4.

Any objections?

If any preexisting weapon needs to be made a bullpup, it's the AK-47.

And there's probably a lot more to it than that. The ejection port would have to be reconfigured, otherwise it would be spraying shells and hot gas in the eyes of left-handed soldiers.

Good idea, but a little more complicated than you think.

While there are many issues that do need to be addressed with it, my idea is honestly meant to be a temporary quick fix until a proper replacement can be found.

I figure the biggest reason the military hasn't adopted a new gun yet is cost. With my plan, there really wouldn't be any need to produce new ammunition, or even many new parts.

Essentially, all existing m-16s can be phased out, and acutally converted to this new design rather than be replaced by it.

no, pie, they cant. You dont understand the logistical problems of simple getting all of those guns and refitting them. Not only that, but you would likely require some modification to existing parts.

I think they should make the entire barrel movable so that it absorbs some of the recoil of the weapon. I think the russians have something similar.

It's actually very simple, logistically. It would stand that a lot of the parts are interchangeable, and they would use the same ammunition, simplifying things even more.

Well, not to mention the fact that since there is a war going on, they could take in all of the M-16s from returning troops and refit those, and give refitted weapons to troops that deploy.

M16 is not used because its the best, its used because its the best for the cheapest.

Which again brings up my point.

This option isn't the best option, but it is the cheapest

Didn't the US just start using the SCAR in April?

Oh, are we finally adopting the SCAR? About damned time. Not as good as H&K, but at least it's FN, which is still pretty good.

No, only our special forces, like Rangers.

Anyway, Seath, such a problem would already be in existence for any change in our AR.

Yes, but I think Seath was more directing it at the fact that Pie wants this to be a temporary fix, like it would be easier, logistically, than a full scale switch.

^ that
You may as well just start using a different gun and ditch the old ones as opposed to refitting all of them.
