Metro 2033

Post by Ryzza on Fri Jan 08, 2010 6:19 am

Another Post Apocalyptic game. This one's set in Russia and being developed by THQ. Caught my attention a couple days ago and looks promising. It'll be available for PC and Xbox 360.

IGN wrote:Metro 2033 begins with a sneak peek at the game's climax, as a desperate band of soldiers makes a last-ditch attempt to reach their final objective, Moscow's iconic Ostankino Tower. This night-time raid is like a pig-shooting vacation to hell. At first you can only make out mounds of rubble and dead branches in the dark. The exquisite lighting engine makes this spooky enough, but soon a stampeding horde comes into view... the Dark Ones. Swarming past by the hundred, at first these giant rat-creatures are oblivious to your rag-tag band, and they storm right on by, flicking in and out of the range of your floodlights.

Then one stops and turns to look at you, and you notice for the first time that they've got human faces. Even to eyes desensitised by the blobby limb-monsters of Dead Space, this is genuinely creepy. At this point the horde changes course, closing in from all sides. You can hold them off for a few agonising seconds, but soon you're overrun. The screen goes black, save for an ominous caption: "Eight days earlier..."

I've been watching this game for awhile now, its got some cool stuff in it like how ammo is also money (might only be certain types), and how when you go up to the surface you have to put your gas mask on and you have to manually check the character's watch to see how much time you have until you have to switch your oxygen tank.

Hmm I am confused by the description of the monsters, its sound like their describing rats with bloodied, grotesque human faces....

So fallout meets survival/ action horror, cant wait Very Happy Though I have a feeling that it will totally fail and the Dark ones don't sound scary... at all

That caught my eye as well. They use specific old, out-of-production bullets as currency.

From what I can tell, that's what they look like. I'd say they don't look scary, but they might get cheap scares.

THQ are my favourite apocalypse developers ever.

If anyone wants a taste for this then go and buy STALKER: Shadow of Chernobyl for a few quid on steam. Tough to get into because it plays so differently to a normal shooter, but once you get into it (can actually fecking hit stuff) it's amazing.

Thanks for pointing this out to me.

I thought that Clear Sky was better, but they're both good games.

As THQ said, I dont think Clear Sky portrayed the atmosphere of being a STALKER - that lonely feeling of being isolated in a place that hates you, ready to die at any second. I just dont think that went as well with big groups cannoning around. Besides, those bastards never got off their arses and helped me capture an enemy base! It was just me on my own hoarding off endless Duty members (because screw those guys) until I got bored.

As for story, no doubt CS was more action packed - but in the same way modern warfare 2 was. It lost a lot of its atmosphere, and in these games immersion is about 80% for me.

Can't wait to try Call of Pripyat.

It sounds like a combination of Fallout and Oblivion.

Combination of Fallout and Oblivion whaaa-?
Fallout = Oblivion w/ paintjob

He meant to say it looked like Fallout, unless he thinks there's swords and daedra and magix in the game...

Minimum Requirements have been revealed.

Its gonna take a good comp to run it, especially since it isn't supposed to be very well optimized for pc.
