AI and their tendency to become homicidal maniacs.

Post by Vigil on Mon Feb 15, 2010 12:08 pm

Following from BB's thread about the trope of little girls with black hair being evil, I thought I'd turn my attention to another trope, the fact that virtually all Artifical Intelligence in science fiction goes crazy and tries to murder everyone. It's a pretty long list.

SHODAN- System shock 1 and 2

GLaDOS-Portal

VIKI- I, Robot

Hal 9000- 2001: A Space Odyssey

WOPR- Wargames

Skynet- Terminator series

The machines from the Matrix

Lore, Data, V'Ger, M5 and the robots from Voyager's 'Prototype'- Star Trek

Ultron- Iron Man

343 Guilty Spark, Mendicant Bias- Halo

Arsenal Gear- Metal Gear Solid 2

CABAL- Commander and Conquer: Tiberian Sun

Aurora unit 242- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Durandal, Tycho- Marathon

Mother Brain- Metroid.

Cyclons- Battlestar Galactica.

The Geth, the rogue VI on the moon, and the AI on the citadel- Mass Effect

Kane did bond with CABAL, but If he is, I would count it as CABAL.

Vigil?

Vigil didn't go insane and kill people.

He just followed protocols on deactivating the stasis pods.

I'd like to point out that Cortana did not go insane.

Which is why her name isn't on the list. Razz

She was close to rampancy at the end of Halo 3 though.

You forget the Claws in "The Second Variety".
True, they were SUPPOSED to be killing machines that would attack anything without a tab, but then things started to change...

The list I have is all the ones I could think of.

Feel free to think of your own suggestions and I'll add them to the list.

GLaDOS wasn't insane... just misunderstood

guilty spark pissed me off the most.... you go to activate the new ring, and instead of shooting you in the back, he blasts Johnson in the face

Well we all knew Spark was going to betray you, but to take it out on Johnson wasn't cool.

Johnson was my favorite character, that bastard.

The Gravemind was literally a "Living" AI, so it's up to you to decide.

Oh, don't forget Medicant Bias. He went crazy on his creators.

What Red Queen? She only killed people to keep people safe from infection. I.E that was what she was programmed to do.
