AI and their tendency to become homicidal maniacs.

Post by Vigil on Mon Feb 15, 2010 5:08 am

Following from BB's thread about the trope of little girls with black hair being evil, I thought I'd turn my attention to another trope, the fact that virtually all Artifical Intelligence in science fiction goes crazy and tries to murder everyone. It's a pretty long list.

SHODAN- System shock 1 and 2

GLaDOS-Portal

VIKI- I, Robot

Hal 9000- 2001: A Space Odyssey

WOPR- Wargames

Skynet- Terminator series

The machines from the Matrix

Lore, Data, V'Ger, M5 and the robots from Voyager's 'Prototype'- Star Trek

Ultron- Iron Man

343 Guilty Spark, Mendicant Bias- Halo

Arsenal Gear- Metal Gear Solid 2

CABAL- Commander and Conquer: Tiberian Sun

Aurora unit 242- Metroid Prime 3: Corruption

Durandal, Tycho- Marathon

Mother Brain- Metroid.

Cyclons- Battlestar Galactica.

The Geth, the rogue VI on the moon, and the AI on the citadel- Mass Effect

Kane did bond with CABAL, but If he is, I would count it as CABAL.

Vigil?

Vigil didn't go insane and kill people.

He just followed protocols on deactivating the stasis pods.

Which is why her name isn't on the list. Razz

She was close to rampancy at the end of Halo 3 though.

You forget the Claws in "The Second Variety".
True, they were SUPPOSED to be killing machines that would attack anything without a tab, but then things started to change...

The list I have is all the ones I could think of.

Feel free to think of your own suggestions and I'll add them to the list.

GLaDOS wasn't insane... just misunderstood

guilty spark pissed me off the most.... you go to activate the new ring, and instead of shooting you in the back, he blasts Johnson in the face

Well we all knew Spark was going to betray you, but to take it out on Johnson wasn't cool.

Johnson was my favorite character, that bastard.

The Gravemind was literally a "Living" AI, so it's up to you to decide.

Oh, don't forget Medicant Bias. He went crazy on his creators.

What Red Queen? She only killed people to keep people safe from infection. I.E that was what she was programmed to do.

HK was an assassination droid, he was designed to kill people, and to date he has never killed whatever master he has by his own free will or by his own means.

The only times he has killed by his masters was once because his master got a unlucky shot to one of his vital parts which overloaded and killed him, which HK himself had no influence over, and when the then Mandlore reprogammed him, so he did it against his will.

Most of the AI's I mentioned started normal, then descended into madness and psychotic rage.

HK was created like that from the start.

Mike from The Moon is a Harsh Mistress didn't really crazy so much as have distorted loyalties. But I still think he's worth mentioning, seeing as he killed millions of people.
(he sided with lunar rebels against earth's dominion because his best friend was a lunar mechanic)
