Rilly's Retribution
Prologue
Rilly stared at his worn boots following one after another, scuffing along the hard of the barracks floor. His feet ached, endless drills depriving him of his time that could be better spent removing that immoral Covenant from the face of the universe. After his first week in this damned hell hole they called the U.N.S.C training facility, he’d been given a Magnum during shooting practice by his Staff Sergeant. If he had a pound for every time he had the urge to flick off the safety and spray that damn idiot, he would be able to refund the Spartan program and have his own bodyguard and, and…No, no, they were dangerous thoughts, he didn’t want to go there. Not again. The sergeant earned his promotion; Rilly lost his a long time ago.
Being in Recon 2 was probably the biggest honor ever; better than being an officer. Recon 2 wasn’t necessarily a high ranking team, merely consisting of a few junior soldiers. No more than 6. Although, the amount of respect you held from being in Recon 2 was immense. They earned it; their success rate must have been over 90% on their missions. He never heard of them fail; they were the U.N.S.C’s right hand men. Being a mere corporal you could challenge the command of a Sergeant Major. Most of the time, your choice was taken over theirs, just on the amount of respect you held for being on the team. Rilly sighed. He was—used to be a part of that, his foolishness lost him that respect and scarred the name of Recon 2 for life. Never again will they be looked upon with the same respect.
His punishment? Demotion, all the way back to Private. He was lucky, anyone else would have been court marshaled. But with the looks he was getting and the loneliness of being left out of games, chats, nights out. He was debating what was worst.
“Hey watch it, Private” A bulky recruit said scornfully as he passed, he could have barely been 18, but with his sheer size he could pass for much, much older. Why he wanted to join the marines Rilly had no idea. The bulky boy could have been a star in wrestling! Rilly nearly fell back from the force of the man’s body brushing past his own. He was about to apologies when he realized he had done nothing wrong. The recruit had purposely walked into him and emphasized the word, Private. It seems everyone knew of his history. Rilly’s demotion had reduced him to the rank of private, which was still higher than recruit. So he could report the bulky boy, but even if he reported the recruit, nothing would happen, no one respected him. Just another example of how he was singled out. He could hear the chuckles from the recruit and his friends behind him, but, moments later he heard him command them to be quiet.
“Sorry, Samson” One of them said sheepishly.
Rilly smiled. Samson. He would remember that name; something told him he would meet that man more than once in his life.
Feeling, yet again, that he had achieved absolutely nothing from the days training secession, Rilly strode back to his dorm for another lonely night whilst the others go out. The sooner I get out of here the better.
