Halo: The Return

The thing starts with a battle on the human planet Kholo. We pan around the battle seeing Elites, Hunters and Grunts as they decimate any surviving marines, as the sky burns. We then cut to 20 years later to a single Elite standing on the surface of the planet, now dead and barren. He narrates that he was breed for war to please their gods and the Prophets. He explains that he was one of the strongest so he was picked by them to do their divine work. He explains that he captured a human ship that told them the location of Kholo, and he was picked to destroy the planet in the Prophet’s name. And so they entered orbit and slaughtered them. He looks round at the remnants of the battle he recollects how while the humans fought bravely, their victories were costly, and in the end, they didn’t change the outcome.

We then cut back to the present and he continues to walk the surface of the planet and explain why he has come back to this world after 20 years, which is after Halo 3 and no longer a member of the Covenant because he seeks forgiveness for his sins and is trying to atone, as he walks the surface of the planet to reach a strange smoke plume on the horizon.

We then cut to Part 2 and the Elite explains the battle in more detail. When the ground forces had been crushed, he was ordered to begin the orbital bombardment, and burn a glyph into the surface, to serve as a message to the humans, and to finish of the survivors. The Prophet on board tells him to burn ‘Faith’ into the planet and so he does, wiping out all around in the beam. The rest of the fleet then burnt the rest of the planet and left it the way we see it now.

He contemplates all the men he’s killed and how the guilt hangs over him like a shroud, but all he can do is keep walking, to the smoke where the burnt scar of his glyph remains, so he can discover what this other remaining spec of life is. The sun is setting and he decides he needs to find some cover before nightfall, he sees some decent cover; an old UNSC bunker and enters looking at horror at all the skeletons littering the floor. He quickly leaves and sleeps in a bomb crater, thinking how his past has come back to haunt him.

It sucks though, because Prototype looks pretty good.

So, how was the comic-book style animation? That may be why the final battle wasn't shown...
