Foreign language?

Post by C-Slay on Wed May 19, 2010 12:13 pm

I'm in spanish class and i don't really get the point. Why do we have to learn another language that we don't use? Why do you need language to go to collage. It's totally gay! Tell me about it.

I am in German and I have to tell you, a foreign language benefits you in ways. Like Vigil said before his negative view, he still used it at points in his life. Be it comedic or intelligent uses, it still came in handy.

I would also like to point out that having the knowledge of another language can increase the chance of being hired in some professions.

@C-Slay I would like to why exactly you think it is "gay", because as of this moment, I suspect you feel this way because you don't want to go through the learning process.

Been learning german for three years.
Can I form a normal sentence? No.
Have I ever needed it? No.

Heck, when I was in Germany I only needed to talk english.

Foreign languages have their uses. For one, there is nothing more priceless than swearing at the teacher in German. It can also serve as an encrypted method of communication between two people during class, provided that both participants are competent.

its not the languarge skills they want to see, its the ability to get those skills that they want to see.

I took 3 years of Spanish and can't speak a lick of it... havn't touched any foreign languages since I got into college... stop being a whiny bitch and study... you'll get through the class and won't have to deal with it again

I suppose I'm the only bugger who enjoyed and took something away from a language class...

I learned Welsh all my life, and French in highschool. I can remember fragments. However, I started learning welsh again by myself a few months ago and am about to start reading Welsh Harry Potter.

Unless you actually want to learn, language lessons are pointless. But learning one is a rewarding experience, opening up an entirely different culture, and allowing you to chat people up with minimum effort!

I did a year or something of Japanese.

I didn't pay attention in class, so I don't know much. But I did get to make Sushi, and watch some Anime.

I like being able to communicate in Spanish with Spanish-speakers. Perhaps not deserving of an entire subject, but to 90% of people it will be more useful than math.

But i am horrendous at Spanish, runs in the family.

Re: Foreign language?

Post by ReconToaster on Thu May 20, 2010 8:30 pm

I think choice is a major problem with language classes. I would love to learn Russian (I've met a lot of Russian guys playing on the PC,) but it's pretty rare for a high school to offer that. At least in the US, high schools generally offer French, Spanish, and Latin.

I, for one, hate the spanish language... and the entirety of spanish culture. I remember seeing a trailer for the movie "Moon" with spanish voice-overs... and I couldn't take it seriously. All I could think was "Spanish will never be spoken in space!"

I have much greater respect for French culture, and I understand how wide-spread the language is... but I probably won't ever go to France or Africa, or anything like that, and I've never met anyone who spoke french.

Latin... well I'm taking latin 2 right now. We don't learn to speak it (which would be pretty cool.) We just learn how to read it. Latin is pretty fucking complicated. The number of declensions/tenses/verb forms.. etc that you have to learn is pretty ridiculous.

Still... I respect the language. I think it would be REALLY cool to speak, or even just to be able to write well in Latin. I'm sure I'll never be any good at it, and I'm sure I'll never use it in the real world.

But it doesn't bother me too much.
