Terraforming Mars

Post by Nocbl2 on Fri May 21, 2010 2:03 pm

Came from the "synthetic life" thread in General Discussion.

I think Mars would be a great place to set up shop. We'd need a hell of a lot of money, but hey, it's fucking Mars!
About people having like 500 babies... yeah, no.

Mars would be awesome. But lets be realistic. Equipment and supplies would need to be transported to mars. So for at least the near future a colony on mars is impossible with the current economical situation and mordern day science and technology.

The moon would be more ideal since it's closer and easier to work with.

Mars has an atmosphere, is larger, and has higher gravity. Mars appears to be the better choice.

What happened to the whole 'the moon is the pitstop to the entire universe' thing?

Meh.

NASA needs a LOT more funding, and with the economic situation, that's just not going to happen any time soon.

I believe that we should be focused on something that will yield better results than something that is quicker.

it takes a fuckload of fuel to just get off of earth... without a base on the moon to resupply, a manned flight to mars would be impossible simply due to cargo capacity needed for all the supplies humans would need for the 3-6 month journey there

Yeah, a moon base would probably required first. What might be feasible in the near future is having construction robots arrive in advance of humans and create a moon base and begin the terraforming process. Humans arrive when the base is complete and continue terraforming, or focus resources on Mars instead.

Hey, I'm all for terraforming Mars.

...So long as there is no life on it that had not originated on earth prior. If life had originated on earth and then had become transferred to Mars, or vice versa, I guess it would still be alright.

I didn't say that we should completely skip over the Moon, just not try and make it Earth. Mars would be much better.
