Well I don't think objects can be sucked up in the grav lift (unless it was being carried by a person) so he had to throw it in and I don't think he had another way out of the ship.

They can, that's how the Spartan II team delivered that over sized football sized tac-nuke into that Covie ship in First Strike, starting the whole tradition of blowing up Covie ships with explosives via the grav lift. The video didn't make much sense at the end, because no one within 10 miles would have been able to escape the hellish inferno that ensued, including Cat and (I forgot his name).
The reason she survived was because the energy shields encased the blast. That's how Kelly and Fred survived in First Strike. And also, the lift didn't pull up the nuke: They threw it inside.

The reason why Fred and Kelly survived was because they crested a mountain (or a cliff?) right before the ship exploded, I think they even lost one of their squad because he was lagging behind or something. But the exploding ship was supposed to act like a giant fragmentation grenade, and it did, it blew up an entire Covenant army and one of the Spartans.

As far as the nuke, I thought it was taped onto the fuselage of the banshee, and she kicked it off, and then it got sucked in, because I remember reading that the banshee rose quite a bit while in the grav lift column and that she physically kicked it off, not threw it up while flying in a banshee.

Partially correct. They do survive by going over a mountain, but Kelly hurls the nuke in like a shot put and Josh is shot down about 100 meters from the ship, and is almost certainly killed before the blast by angry Covenant, though if he did survive somehow, the blast did him in.

Yeah, I knew one Spartan died, but I don't remember exactly what happened. I haven't read the book in a while, but I could have sworn she kicked the nuke out, because it seems kind of strange she could throw it while piloting the banshee.

I think it said she got up and threw it, and then got back in and drove. That might support the 'gravlift' theory.

It's some native creature, but it kinda does look it a Drinol...

I like to think of it as the Cloverfield monster. Razz

the native creatures are non aggressive... this thing is 15 feet tall and charging at Spartans through gunfire....

it is also in the same body proportions as the Drinol...

also... I guess there goes the notion that the Covenant were Humanities first contact with Alien life Razz

I thought they met alien life before, just the Covenant were extremely hostile.
