Scariest Religious Passages

Post by Tylertlat on Tue Sep 14, 2010 8:27 pm

Of the many fear-inducing lines of any religion (as in people actually believe(d) it, not an intentionally fictional religion), which most terrifies you? Most basically, what is the passage, but if your willing, explain the context, why it invokes that reaction from you personally, ect.

Just to start, I'll list mine; for the Bible: Mark 11:13, 14, & 20
Not too far away, he saw a fig tree. It was covered with leaves. He went to find out if it had any fruit. When he reached it, he found nothing but leaves. It was not the season for figs.

14 Then Jesus said to the tree, "May no one ever eat fruit from you again!" And his disciples heard him say it.

20 In the morning as Jesus and his disciples walked along, they saw the fig tree. It was dried up all the way down to the roots.

So the Son of the Creator of the Universe used his divine and unfathomable power to smite a tree?

Nothing wrong with this at all. Keep moving.

That is odd, kinda scary I guess. I don't pay enough attention to religion to have a scary passage.

I don't get it.

I mean, the tree part. What's so scary about Jesus killing a tree?

But I know thy abode, and thy going out, and thy coming in, and thy rage against me.
Because thy rage against me and thy tumult is come up into mine ears, therefore I will
put my hook in thy nose, and my bridle in thy lips, and I will turn thee back by the way
by which thou camest.

SECOND KINGS 19: 27-28, King James Version.

Not sure about the context, but thats God speaking.

I was hoping to see other's passages but I need to explain my own to get that, then here goes. My passage is terrifying for personally reasons. First, there's Jesus, the perfect example of peace and love whose sole reason for becoming human is the willful acceptance of all man's punishment as opposed to God in the old testament punishing man, instantly destroying the tree. This in itself is somewhat psychologically jarring, to see Jesus use deadly force on anything (since even with Legion he just made them stop possessing the guy), but when i first heard it I didn't understand the context, so it seemed like the tree just happened to be there when Jesus wanted to teach a parable, and for that was destroyed( it's just a tree, but it's the way it happened. being chopped down is bad, but being denounced by God? :shivers:) Later I learned that if a fig tree is covered in leaves like that, it means it should be ready for harvest, so the tree was healthy but unproductive. As a sometimes uncomfortable evangelist, I can sometimes see a parallel between myself and the tree. So this passage is scary for personal reason and because of my view of the underlying principles, not because of the death of a tree.

Ok, now that that's done, I want to hear yours!

doesn't have to be the bible, just any religious text. so long as you find it most fear-inducing.

Revelation 5 wrote:14"To the angel of the church in Laodicea write: These are the words of the Amen, the faithful and true witness, the ruler of God's creation. 15I know your deeds, that you are neither cold nor hot. I wish you were either one or the other! 16So, because you are lukewarm—neither hot nor cold—I am about to spit you out of my mouth. 17You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind and naked.

I'm sure the context here is obvious. For a religious person, the promise that "lukewarm" Christians will be spit out by God is obviously a little disconcerting. I don't really find much else within the Bible to be very scary, and I'm not familiar with any other religious texts well enough to be scared by any of their passages. I could probably find some fun prophecies, but I'm too enamored with prophecy to be scared by any of them.

Fear is not the point of spiders. Doesn't mean I'm not afraid of the damned fuckers. It's just a thread in which we discuss stuff.

You could argue one of the points to religion is fear. At least it was - scaring those peasants away from Hell so they didn't steal and whatnot. Makes sense.

Here's some pretty awesome/slightly terrifying bible verses: ta da!
