I think we can safely say that this dispute is over.

I had fun, but I don't even play LoL much anymore so I'm loosing interest in this Razz

It's hardly a dispute...

I shared an opinion and a few people got mad about it and insisted I was wrong without providing any support for their case.

Whatever.

Yeah if you didn't read our responses I guess it would seem like we didn't have any support.

Gauz, you didn't name a single part about the game which could be considered strategic and don't even pretend like you did. All you did was tell me I'm wrong and I should play it more so I can find out how dumb I am.

It has become clear that Civ dislikes the game and thinks there is no strategy, and that other people disagree. Stop bitching at each other, this argument isn't going anywhere since it is rooted primarily in opinion.

Almost all arguments are, seath. That's why challenges of an opinion must use supportive evidence or reasoning to be of any use.

Well, positioning, for one. Knowing when to push, when to retreat, when to flank, when to engage, when to turn and burn, when to support and when to abandon a teammate, when to go for dragon, when to try and steal dragon, and when to just let the enemy have it. All of these things constitute strategy. Warding is a huge part of it, too. The name of the game is map control. If you know where they are, it is much easier to control them. If you know when they're going for dragon or baron, or when one is alone, it is easier. Team fighting is a huge part of strategy. You need to know who initiates, who to focus, where you need to be, etc. When you get out of the figurative Bronze League, it stops being about grouping up and rolling and becomes much more tactical. Even on the low level that I play, this is very regular. You can go in 2v5 but if you're just A-clicking it is easy to get outplayed and lose the fight. Moreover, what you are building is huge. You have an overall goal, depending on what you're playing, but any good player is going to tweak how he builds depending on who he's against. As before, once you get out of the figurative Bronze League, static builds aren't always going to cut it. If you're a tank and they're more AD heavy, you may skimp on magic resist and get some armor. Maybe their AD is really shutting you down, so you pick up a thornmail and a frozen heart. Maybe you're the AP mid, but you're in lane against a tanky assassin like Akali. You'll do well to forego that early Deathcap and get an RoA instead, because you're going to need the health to survive the burst. Maybe you're getting your ass handed to you in mid by Veigar, so you rush a Banshee's Veil to shut down his burst. All of these sorts of things depends on what kind of team you have, what kind of enemy you are facing, how the game has gone so far, and a dozen more variables. And that's without touching runes, masteries, jungling, deciding on team comps, draft pick, off-meta roles, etc.

So no, simplifying it down to "farming" and "ganking" and then saying the game is a grind is just stupid. It is simplifying BF2 down to "killing" and "capturing" and saying that it is a grind. It is simplifying SC2 down to "building" and "attack moving" and saying that it is a grind. It is simplifying Portal to "walking" and "shooting" and saying it is a grind.

I didn't feel it necessary to comment about all the strategy because rot did. Also, that's not nearly all the strategy there is, just a sample.

The key thing here is that the argument is around a single issue "Is there strategy in LoL" whereas most other arguments have a wide array of factors. When an argument is focused on one single facet like this one AND both parties are completely opposed to each other in opinion a compromise cannot be found. Because of this both parties bicker at each other until they give up on the argument altogether.

Compare this to real world arguments like "Does Detroit need another bridge to Canada?"
There are at the very least two very identifiable arguing points with that one, such as "It would allow increased traffic, which is needed" and "It would cost a lot, which is bad". Most people wouldn't be completely polarized to being for or against the proposed bridge in this argument.

Didn't read it because it was a response to dragoon. At least it's something, though.

The only difference was that one argument was already boiled down to the opinion while the other one was less obvious. Doesn't mean there is not an argument to be had, though. Opinions change.

Re: League of Legends

Post by Gauz on Sun Aug 12, 2012 2:58 pm

Zyra was SOOO strong. I mainly play the PBE and she's pretty balanced now.

Diana fills her role. She's like Akali sort of, except she has to make up for not having invisibility by being tankier.

The new champ is pretty cool too. His name is rengar. I think his inspiration was like... Predators from AvP.

He has a unique item you can buy that gives flat damage, then +2 per level. For every few kills (kills are treated as trophies, you lose 1 per death) he gains bonuses. So don't feed him!

His passive is cool, if he's in stealth (his ult gives him stealth and so do bushes) he can leap (range 600) to a target using a basic attack.

He also is CD based, and all his skills build "Voracity" each skill giving 1 voracity to a max of 5. At 5 voracity he can activate a skill (Q,W,E) for another affect.

Q: Next basic attack does bonus damage and raises attck speed
Voracity bonus: More damage... more attack speed
W: Some AoE that does magic damage.
Voracity: heals him for 15% of his max health (15% at all ranks)
E: Throws a sling (target, not skill shot) that deals damage and slows.
Voracity: It roots for 1 second.
R: He stealths, reveals all champs in a large radius around him, and some other shit that I don't remember.

Pretty fun.
