I find that very statement to be fundamentally wrong.
If there wasn't a problem there would not be any worry. There IS some kind of trouble, regardless of wether its bad or not.

Re: Tsunami in Japan

they just have to manually cool them, which is causing buildups of steam that are causing 'pops' that get conveyed in the american media as explosions.

the actual reactors are fine though.

the reason people worry is because f american media. just like how H1N1 was going to kill us all....even though patient zero survived...and he was only a child.

I know the actual reactor vessels are fine. If they were not there would be a bigger issue.

I was just stating that there obviously IS an issue, just not a huge one, and was wondering how people think this will progress.

I don't think it will get much worse than it already is.

Okay, so wasting the reactors with sea water doesn't seem at all unusual to you? So you believe that they are in perfect shape is what you are saying. I also ignore the US media, btw.

all it is is that the cooling systems generator shut down. so they have to cool them in a different way that the plant wasn't really meant for.

Re: Tsunami in Japan

Post by Ringleader on Wed Mar 16, 2011 9:46 am

Well, yeah, lol an earthquake happened and the reactor was a building so...

They're normally cooled with heavy water or sodium, so long as the heat doesn't evaporate all of it, then a meltdown really can't happen. Pumping in seawater to cool the reactors is fine, steam gets let off just as it always would except it doesn't turn any turbines.

I heard they detected some amount of cesium though, which would indicate some meltdown had occurred. It can't possibly be as big as Chernobyl though, I mean, modern nuclear reactors are so much safer and more advanced than the older ones, especially old Soviet shit.

I think NT meant that theres nothing wrong with them to cause immediate concern in the face of more pressing events, like the destruction of a huge swath of Japan along with the deaths of hundreds if not thousands of people, way to break it down in context.

I initially stated that there appears to be a problem and then a few people came and told me that everything was perfectly fine.

If they are are pumping in seawater which will more than likely damage/destroy the reactors, there is quite obviously some kind of problem.

Im not saying its a huge issue, just that an issue exists despite most everyone else disagreeing.

I think what they meant to say is that it really isn't too big of an issue. The nuclear reactor did fail pretty badly, but there are plenty of safeguards in place to stop it from being Chernobyl II: The Reactor Strikes Back.

Pumping water and shit is what keeps the Reactor from blowing on a normal basis.

So doing it is not bad, otherwise it gets real hot and goes boom (which IS bad)

I know how reactors work so stop assuming that I don't. I said that pumping in SALT WATER is not good for the reactor, and they wouldn't do it unless it was necessary. This was in response to others stating that there was NO PROBLEM at all.

Also, I have said it at least once and will say it again: I haven't been paying attention to the fucking American News Sources.

its not bad for the reactor at all, it just causes a build up of gas that isn't able to be easily vented (hence the explosions) and the salt water isn't going into the reactor too much, just over the rods.

its bad for the reactor. and if it goes over the rods that means its going into the reactor.

where have you heard its bad for the reactor?

its not. It's just not what was MEANT to happen, so the additional output of gas didn't have a natural escape means within the building. so it made one. reactor not damaged.

Experts saying its bad, a former Nuclear Operator from an Aircraft Carrier saying its bad, general knowledge about salt water and how it is very different from the normal purified water and will likely cause damage to multiple parts of the reactor.

This explains some of it

KristallNacht wrote:

Saltwater wasn't meant to be added because its not what is supposed to be used to cool the reactor. They are designed to handle a single coolant liquid(Maybe two in some cases, have not heard of one though). And the explosion was not meant to happen, but you are right that it didn't damage the reactor from what we can tell. That does not mean there isn't a problem with the reactor though.

Not well.

They pouring sea water, water from poilce water cannons and by Helicopter in a desperate attempt to keep it cool, and the other two reactors are now suffering cooling problems.

They're doing everything they can, but even then it looks like it's a losing battle.

I've been trying to keep up in the local paper.

One of my co-worker's mom's was freaking out saying stuff like, "WE'RE GOING TO DIE! WE'RE GOING TO DIE!" When really, when the radiation gets to Iowa...it'll be less than a microwave so I'm not worried about us if it does meltdown. I'm more worried about you guys over there. And for the fact that Japan is still getting over the nuke bomb we dropped on them 66 years ago. I can't believe what it will be like when 3 of their reactors melt down. Sad
