It's an MMOFPS, so I expect PC exclusive. It looks interesting, because the game really reminded me of Battlefield 2, the way it opened and the way it looked to handle.

Civ, there are 5,000 player battles on that game.

Not on console.

Civ was saying that it being made by Sony meant it likely wouldn't be good, not that it would likely be on console.

That said, the gameplay seems solid, but I can't help but hate how it has strayed from the simple formula of PlanetSide to incorporate so many aspects of Battlefield. I abhor the class system, and the ways bases are captured now.

I never played the original Planetside, but I rather like how it is right now. I suppose the base capturing could be improved a bit. Then again, my only points of comparison are Battlefield and SW: Battlefront, so.... yah.

um, if you want an MMOFPS, look at Dust 514. It's even directly connected to EVE online in real time.

you don't have to play EVE to play Dust 514. It's just literally the same universe, with the same corporations fighting for control. You can simply be a merc to the best paying corporation and fight for their cause.

Re: Planetside 2

Let me just outline how PlanetSide worked, the basics.

In PlanetSide, you got XP for kills and captures and hacks and shit. This XP went towards levels. Each level, you get battle ranks and certifications, which you can apply towards your kit. You can invest in weapons, vehicles, armors, etc. Different armor restrict you from various weapons and have various inventory sizes, etc. There are no preassigned classes. There are no special abilities, beyond the properties of the weapons, armor, and vehicles you've invested into. Most of the time, people specialized, but you didn't have to specialize.

There were three kinds of bases: towers, LLU bases, and regular bases. Capturing all three relied entirely on hackers. Hackers are typically ill-suited to defending themselves, because the Infiltrator Suit that is their bread and butter disallows them from using anything but pistols. Thus, you needed to get a team into the base to defend the hacker while he hacked the control terminal.

With towers and regular bases, once the terminal was hacked, that faction had to hold that terminal and prevent any other hackers from hacking the terminal back for 15 minutes. With LLU bases (which were somewhat rare), hacking the terminal caused an LLU to spawn, which was much like a flag, and had to be returned to a very specific base within 15 minutes.

Fighting in bases and towers was somewhat chaotic, but there was more to defense and offense than "CHARGE!" as it is now. It required teamwork, because only certain people could efficiently capture bases, while other people were more effective at protecting that person, getting that person to the front, or stopping that person from taking the base. An offensive was worthless without organization, because anyone worth their snot who wasn't a hacker could identify and prioritize a hacker (Infiltrator Suits stood out when not cloaked). There was even a higher level implant that allowed people to see cloaked, which was designed explicitly for countering hackers and mobile spawn points (which created a localized cloaking field when deployed). Similarly, an unorganized defense could be thwarted by a particularly skilled hacker. All he had to do was hack the terminal and kill any hacker who attempted to rehack the terminal. Coordination was key.

I haven't played Planetside 1 or two but betting everything on one character class winning a battle seems like it would stalemate alot.

There are no classes, however. Anyone could invest to carry a hacking tool, it just wasn't efficient. It meant that you had to protect certain players like you might protect a flag carrier in CTF. Bases changed hands all the time, many of the planets regularly changed hands, but doing so required tactic and coordination.

Yah, that capture system sounds more fun, although I feel like varied base classes is for the better (it would make sense to allow classes to draw equipment from other classes, though)

Classes aren't an inherently bad idea. They are only a problem if they are unduly restrictive or imbalanced.

eve has a low curve if you specialize. It's when you're trying to understand EVERYTHING that it has a ridiculous curve.

Dust 514 is just an mmofps in the same universe as EVE, and doesn't have all the complexity of it.
