The Silmarillion....
I found this book, "The Silmarillion" The first thing that I noticed is
1. Its by J.R.R. Tolkien
2. It looks pretty fucking old, and the fact that I have never heard of it, makes me think it might be pretty old.

I open the front page and I look at what books the author wrote ( I knew it was LOTR) but what intrigued me is that It had listed the main LOTR series, which made me think it isn't as old as I thought(Maybe coming after the main series, I think.), but its pretty fucking beat up. Anyone ever heard of/read this book?

I attempted to read this once.
Did not get past the first page.
Basically, it's a large book of backstory to MiddleEarth, both before, during and after the events of the main stories. It's not a separate story in it's own right, but a collection of lore and how the world came what it was.

Re: The Silmarillion....
I haven't even made it past the first third of the first LOTR movie, much less read any of his books or backstory. Never got into LOTR.

Re: The Silmarillion....
Silmarilian is actually very interesting.
While the beginning is pretty slow (since it's about creation and stuff) the thing you have to realize is that it's not one story. There are a lot off pieces in it that are stories which are somewhat separate.
It CAN be disconcerting when the subject appears to change and the story suddenly follows a new person or group of persons (such as Turin, who shows up, and then his story takes up a ton of pages).
I've only read it cover-to-cover twice.
It has a lot of really cool parts, but some areas are less so. I think the problem is that it was compiled and published after Tolkien's death, by his son. However, at least Christopher Tolkien did a far better job with his dad's stuff than Frank Herbert's son did.

Last of his books published; essentially, this is a collection of what he was working on when he died, and what Christopher Tolkein managed to piece together from his father's wastebasket.
It's essentially an exercise in hammering together disparate bits of lore (IIRC, The Hobbit wasn't originally part of the universe that Lord of the Rings takes place in. There were still a few problems with meshing the two together when Tolkein wrote LoTR, so some more joining and smoothing of lore takes place in here.
