For all we know space really is empty and boring from what we've seen, but deep in the ocean is brimming with life we don't know shit about and have never seen. Living in ways we haven't imagined.

Fuck space, it's all about the ocean.

Cthulhu. Cthulhu is down there.

Don't believe me? Listen to the Bloop and tell me there's not some kind of eldrtich fucking monster under there.

Honestly, of all the unexplained sounds NOAA recorded in the 90's, Bloop has always felt like the most boring. It sounds like a bubble of air surfacing. I'm more a fan of Train, Slow Down, and Upsweep.

NOAA has offered likely explanations for all of the unexplained sounds. Bloop was an icequake, Julia, Train, and Slow Down are icebergs running aground, Whistle is a sound water current sometimes makes under perfect circumstances, and Upsweep is volcanic activity of some kind. I can buy Julia and Slow Down, because friction does slowly lower in frequency, but Train maintains a constant frequency, and cuts in and out. And Upsweep is only associated with volcanic activity because the place it's coming from is an active underwater volcano and NOAA has no other explanation for the sound.

But if you record it and play it back at 10x speed...

Upsweep sounds quite biological when played at 16x speed, which is what the Wikipedia article offers. It's my understanding that the sound has been constant since we started recording in 1991, and that it grows stronger as the Equinoxes approach and weaker as the Solstices approach. Quite the mystery.
