I've got enough games on my plate at the moment, I'll sit this one out.

I know what Isometric is bro. Isometric implies its like not real 3D tho.. so I'd call it Fixed 3D rather than isometric.

no gauz, isometric has to do with perspective. if you are looking at any 3d view that does not have parallel objects receding to a vanishing point then you are looking at an isometric view.

if you are looking STRAIGHT down on it then I would agree that it is a flat projection (IE top-down), but it would be pretty damn hard to tell whats happening with a view like that... I think the last game I played that was like that was a shitty flash game.

these are terms that I actually use in my job... I dont care what your opinion of the view is, I'm actually using words by their definition.

AND I still win the argument even if we arent talking about isometric vs ??? views on a perspective level (techincally there are only flat, isometric, oblique, and perspective as options there)

Actually, that link supports Gauz's definition, describing isometric as 2.5D and perspective as 3D. In this case, DotA2 and LoL would be perspective rather than isometric. It would seem that, at least in video game design, isometric refers specifically to the use of 2D images drawn to look 3D rather than a proper 3D engine to simulate a 3D environment.

in video game terms Diablo 3 is considered isometric, and it is a hell of a lot more 3d than Dota

the rendering doesnt matter, it is how it is displayed onscreen that matters. all games are 2d since they are viewed on a flat surface, the projection is what makes it isometric not the rendering technology.

perspective projection REQUIRES parallel objects receding to a common vanishing point, which... if you read beyond the first paragraph in that article... is clearly stated

And 2.5D is used to refer to games in when the graphics are 3d but you move in a 2 dimensional space (ie. Shadow Complex, Explosion Man, Comic Jumper)

Fair fair then. I had always heard 2.5D used to refer to early pioneers of 3D like Doom and Quake, where the game isn't 3D in the sense we understand it now, but created the illusion of it.

It gets used for both. 3d graphics in 2d space and 2d graphics in 3d space.

Diablo 3 isn't that 3d considering trees are 2d.

thats not anything unusual... most things in games that are only viewable from a single angle will be made of one sided textures and planes.

super mario 64 for example has 2d trees, bushes, ext... but it is NOT isometric because how things are rendered has no bearing on that question

the worst part with this whole dumb debate is that I really dont care that its isometric, most of my favorite games are isometric.

it IS the overhead view that bothers me, I simply prefer the 3rd person view of smite
