Fuck yeah, Snowden

Post by Dud Doodoo on Tue Jun 25, 2013 1:31 pm

Seriously, why haven't we had a thread on this?  Someone finally had the balls to expose some of the shit our government has been doing that is in clear violation of the constitution.

He's currently in Russia, and Putin is thoroughly enjoying the fuss we're making to get him back.

As a denier of rights and silencer of speech I say fuck that guy.

And I am surprised that you people are honestly surprised that that shit was going on. I though that everyone with half a brain assumed that shit was already happening.

"oh gawd, the government has the ability to listen to us on the phone and has records of all our contact info and call records"

-me: "yeah, no shit"

I wonder if they know that Google Chrome is systematically recording their every action on the Internet, even in Incognito mode, in order to allow Google to profile you and cache sites that it thinks you will like on your computer to allow for significantly faster load times? Not to mention that Google's been reading our emails since Gmail stormed the market, kicked MSN and Yahoo! in the balls, and gave everyone free email services.

Meanwhile, I'm going to keep using Chrome, because I couldn't give two flying fucks if Google knows what type of porn I watch or that I like to buy silly awesome T-shirts from Swagling. And I'll keep using my cell phone and the Internet because I don't care if the government knows that shit too. The government has so much raw data from the Internet that they literally don't even know what they have. They're sitting on tapedisk datacenters filled with Exabytes of information that they can't even begin to parse or sort.

There aren't computers currently in existence that could parse that much data. I mean, fuck, a couple of mere Gigabytes in .txt format is enough to bring the average PC to its knees. We're talking about millions of Gigabytes, maybe even billions, of raw captured data stored across giant arrays of tapedisks.

I wasn't really surprised about the programs he leaked.

I'm more surprised about the countries hes allegedly seeking asylum in.

Pheonix, the thing is that while everyone pretty much knew the NSA was doing this, there was never any actual proof of it available to the public.

And while I do see this as pretty shitty for a government to do, it's mostly a waste of resources at this point as too much information is being processed on the web to be able to realistically do anything about it, especially with some people going around encrypting all their emails, just further slowing down the process of sifting through everything.

Also, in your comments about Google, Google has shown, at least at times, that they do believe in peoples' rights to privacy. I know it was a big deal when Google fought a government subpoena to provide them with search data.

And Mr.Inferior of the two Admins, I once actually did the math on how you could watch EVERY youtube video. And just to watch all the ones coming in from here forward, assuming the pace stays exactly as it is right now, you'd need over 6000 monitors (or 6000 viewing spaces on partitioned displays). Since the last stats I saw were that every minute 100 hours of video is uploaded.

Would be very interesting if someone actually set up such a computer as like a modern art piece haha, just brimming with displays showing videos as they uploaded.

Hey, if the US government was the merest fraction as competent as Google, I'd cut them more slack. Not much, but a little.

I don't trust the federal government with my private information, because they've shown themselves to be more than willing to abuse it. Therefore, I fight against this NSA crap and the TSA's whitelists. Similarly, I don't trust the likes of Microsoft and Sony with that info, so I opposed a console that mandates once-a-day check-ins and a connected Kinect.

I'm going to keep using Chrome because there's really no better options; I hope that changes in the future, or we at least get transparency on what information is collected and who it is being sold to.

And my cell phone is an obsolete brick, because I rarely get calls, never surf the web on it, and mostly use it as a pocket watch.

Good to know that they're wasting taxpayer dollars over nothing, right? Now lets get about burning that information before they do get sufficient computing power, then get around to prosecuting the responsible parties and setting up oversight to make sure that this doesn't happen again.
