Mental Illness meds

Post by CivBase on Thu Dec 04, 2008 12:55 am

So, should they be used? If so, how often?

Personaly, I don't think these meds should be used near as often as they are. I do realise that there are people that need them to function anywhere near correctly in society (and maybe to even live), but they seem to just hand them out like the AOL CDs you used to get in the mail every 5 days.

I have some friends with some minor mental illnesses, and they are nice. However, they were put on these drugs and they have become dependent on them. If they don't have them, they start to act terribly (each in a different way). They are phisicaly dependent on the drugs. And how do the doctors compensate for this? More drugs of course! It just drains the parents of their money and secludes the person from society.

Believe it or not, I myself was once thought to have a mental illness. Durring preschool, the school talked to my parents about having me tested, and they flat out refuesed. They had seen what happened to people that had failed the tests. Now I have many friends in school, participate in activites, and get good grades (average between 85% and 90%). Some of my friends that have these illnesses and actualy took the tests aren't as lucky. At a very young age they were put on meds and many of them are a grade behind or failing and have few friends.

So what do you think? Should children (18 years of age or less) be given meds for mental illnesses?
They seem to have gotten along rather well all these years before.

i believ it should only be for sevier*SP* cases and its sad they have gotten dependant on thses drugs and i too have freinds that act differently without them and are only "normal" with them while they only have ADD but i may just not understand the illnesse.

Now that's an excuse I find extreamly old....
I've got a girl in my grade that blames half of her actions on her OCD tendency. She acts as well as anyone else in society, but that excuse gets kinda old after a while.

are we speaking of FORCING meds? or just providing? because we should provide meds for all of the above, but only FORCE meds on those that could cause harm to themselves or others.

I am getting ADD meds soon, btw

Yeah, and so does every other kid in any industrialized nation of the 21st century. I shall cite a quote from the great Nolan Bushnell, founder of Atari:

“Many kids with (attention deficit disorder) have been misdiagnosed, they're actually bored with teachers, as most won't even blink at concentrating on video games for hours,”

ADD is not a condition, it's human nature. We are a bored people.

Eh, I actually have ADD. As even playing most games I can lose attention.

Furthermore, even when I have a strong will and intention to accomplish necessary things, I fail to be able to. I've actually taken some of my friends meds a few times and during the time of their effect, I could do exactly those things with ease to a near OCD level of attentiveness.

Well, I certainly cannot EVER focus on doing homework... but that's not so much a disorder. You, NT, may be one of the few that ACTUALLY have a "condition," but most people (including many of my friends) are diagnosed as ADD when really they just get bored with school related work.

Again, I cannot focus on homework for the life of me, but I can replay the same level in Left 4 Dead on extreme, all night, for 5 nights in a row
